Allymes Castle history
In 1335 Allymes castle passed into the possession of the House of Savoy according to the agreement of the Treaty of Chapareillan. The castle was demolished in 1557, after the decision of Parliament against the lord of Allima, for being one of the chief leaders of the conspiracy against Lyon. In 1559, after the Italian War, the castle returned to the possessions of the House of Savoy and was restored. After the French Revolution, the castle was poorly maintained and began to fall into ruin. Between 1964 and 1991 the castle was restored. Since 1984 the castle has been owned by the commune Ambérieu-en-Bugey.
Description of Allymes Castle
The castle is located on the top of a mountain at an altitude of 650 meters above sea level. The castle includes a defensive wall, 90 meters long, with the watchtower on the north side, at the end of the wall. On the south side, the wall is connected to the square citadel having the square keep located on the southwest corner and the round fortified tower located on the northeast corner. The citadel is surrounded by four curtain walls that are connected to both towers.
