Auerbach Castle history

In the 16th century, Auerbach Castle increasingly lost its strategic importance, as its fortifications could no longer withstand powerful and long-range artillery. During the Thirty Years' War, the castle was not used for military purposes. In 1674, during the Franco-Dutch War, the castle was stormed by an army led by the French marshal Turenne, and the castle was set on fire. The destruction inflicted on the castle was so severe that the Auerbach castle was left in ruins, as we see today. Since 2007 the ruins of the castle have been restored.
