Friedewald Castle is the restored water castle and the urban castle, built around 1300 for the Hersfeld Benedictine imperial abbey for the purpose control trade routes. The castle houses Friedewald Castle Museum.

Friedewald Castle history
Between 1489 and 1500 the outer bailey was rebuilt. During the Thirty Years' War, the castle was taken over by successive squatters. During the Seven Years' War in 1762, French troops captured and destroyed the castle.
