Freienfels Castle of Hesse by EuroTourData

Freienfels Castle is the restored spur castle, built around 1300 as the counter-castle of the County of Weilnau to protect against militant expansion of the County of Nassau. At the end of the 18th century, the castle, which was never destroyed by war or civil strife, gradually fell into disrepair as an abandoned one and was used by the villagers as a quarry. In 1996 the Freienfels Castle Friends Association (in German: Förderverein zur Erhaltung der Burgruine Freienfels e.V.) became the owner of the castle ruins. The purpose of the association is to preserve the ruins of the castle in their current form. The castle houses Freienfels Castle Museum. Source: the article Burg Freienfels of German Wikipedia.
