Schönecken Castle in Rhineland-Palatinate by EuroTourData
Schönecken Castle is the restored ruins of the hill castle, built around 1230 for the Counts of Vianden to protect territories of the benedictine abbey in Prüm. In 1576, the castle lost its strategic importance and fell into disrepair. Since 1970 the castle is owned by the Rhineland-Palatinate General Directorate for Cultural Heritage (in German Generaldirektion Kulturelles Erbe Rheinland-Pfalz).
