Wertheim Castle history

In 1619 a gunpowder explosion destroyed some parts of the castle. During the Thirty Years' War, the castle was occupied by Swedish troops, and in 1634, after artillery shelling by imperial troops, the castle was in ruins. Since 1995 the castle belongs to the town of Wertheim.

Description of Wertheim Castle

After 1400, the castle received powerful defensive walls that were connected to the city walls of Wertheim. In the center of the inner bailey located the keep about 25 meters high, surrounded by a high defensive wall on the east side. The ruins of the Palas are nearby. The outer bailey is at a much lower level of the hillside.
